About Fiji
There is so much to see, do, eat and experience in Fiji that weeks can go by without seeing the bottom of the list! From the island’s rich tapestry of culture and history, which date back to 1,000 BC, to exploring the waterfalls, lakes and forests dotting the volcanic mountains and swimming amongst the magnificent coral reefs and its colourful denizens – it’s a never-ending stream of activities. Fiji counts amongst one of the world’s best diving and surfing destinations and its beaches are some of the prettiest. Fiji’s nightlife, cuisine and monuments allow visitors a glimpse into the happy melting pot of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic humanity that has settled in these islands over the centuries.
Things to Do in Fiji
You can pick about any island off its 332 and it’s it’ll be great, but of course there will be winners. Islands like Savusavu and Mamanucas are unbeatable for the sheer amount of adrenaline-pumping activities like deep sea diving, mountain-climbing and windsurfing. Then, Pacific Harbour and Beqa are known for jet-ski safaris, all-inclusive yacht and catamaran charters, parasailing and off-road four-wheel drive safaris, shark dives and ziplining. Deep-sea diving enthusiasts would love the Yasawa chain of islands for its plethora of diving hotspots and superb snorkelling just off the golden sand beaches. Fiji has protected marine reserves where swimmers and divers can get up close with giant manta rays, spinner dolphins and over 1,200 species of exotic fish! For nightlife and shopping, head over to Nadi and Denarau. These hotspots woo travellers with high streets, restaurants and clubbing. Yacht charters from the Denarau Marina will have adventurous travellers cruising Fiji’s blue waters in luxury catamarans, yachts and sleek sailing ships.
Best time to visit Fiji
Except for the wet season from November to April, Fiji has cool ocean breezes and warm waters almost year-round. The best weather and time to be holidaying here would undoubtedly be from June to September or December to January, because the weather stays around a balmy 25°C. In the evenings, cool southerly breezes bring temperatures down to 19-20°C, perfect for a hop around the islands. For divers, November to April is the best time for underwater adventures.
Visiting during festivals is always a good idea to sample the best of Fijian culture and hospitality. Suva has one of the largest New Year celebrations with an annual street party. Holi, an Indian festival, is celebrated with fervour and people douse each other with buckets of coloured water. Nadi’s Bula Festival and Suva’s Hibiscus Festival both occur in August and they showcase the epitome of Fijian warmth and hospitality. We also jotted down some helpful travel tips for visiting Fiji – every nugget helps!
