Waidroka Bay Resort

We were not disappointed. The resort was all we could ask for. Our room was newly renovated, clean and house keeping was great. The diving was excellent. Sam(dm) and Jim (boat captain) were #1. We had a great week diving with these 2 men. They work hard to ensure you have a great dive. All the staff were amazing and friendly. One big family. The food was terrific. Freshly made to you speciations. The managers Anatol and Christine went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. They also suggested cultural tours which were excellent. I am just wrapping up an absolutely fantastic 5-day dive stay at Waidroka Beach Resort and thought I should share my comments so that others could have the same experience. For a bit of background info, I’m a freshly certified Divemaster comfortable with currents and swells. I was eager to get into some lively situations after some hellishly boring dives at a fancy resort in Taveuni so I communicated that to the dive team ahead of time. The dive team at Waidroka heard me and 100% delivered. I probably got incredibly lucky since I happened to be the only diving customer at the resort but what I received was *beyond* princess diving… I got buddied up with one of the best DMs I’ve ever dived with and we did all kinds of fun stuff together. However, I’m sure if you are a beginner they would absolutely make sure that you have a good time as well. No ask was too much, every dive was based on my preferences, and best of all, they took me on not 1, but 2 of the famous shark dives. If you haven’t heard of the shark dives in Beqa Lagoon before and frown at the concept of chumming, I’m with you… But this was something else. Basically, you are being put behind a rock barrier so that you can witness bulls and tigers coming in and eating the larger fish that are eating the fish heads deposited into the water. That’s cool and breathtakingly awesome enough. However my DM went the extra mile and brought me over the barrier and into the shark mayhem so that I would have the front row experience and get the GoPro footage I had hoped for. I basically had one DM on one side and another one on the other side fending off any incoming bulls that were getting closer than a meter or so. Never did I once feel in danger as our briefings had been thorough, we knew we’d need to monitor our deco numbers for the second dive and my divemaster (SAM THE MAN!) had everything under control at all times. The people in charge of the shop itself are the sweetest couple on the planet and their competency showed from the second I walked in. Their gear is solid, everything is wonderfully organized, and their boats are perfectly laid out for divers. I also have to comment on the skills of the captains who navigated some treacherous swells with remarkable ease. I was fortunate enough to be able to dive with one of the shop managers (James) and we had the grandest time sneaking up on a gorgeous sleepy leopard shark, finding all kinds of cool crabs and nudis, and finishing the dive with a mid-day lovely octopus encounter. Oh, and the rest of the staff? Every single one of them embraced me as part of the family from day one. You can truly feel the genuine care beyond the smiles all throughout the premises, and it is very clear that it’s not just for show. If you are looking for a five star resort, this ain’t it. However, it’s a solid 3+ star as listed and what they do, they do absolutely beautifully. The food is excellent, the service thoroughly attentive and truth be told I greatly preferred it to the “luxury” resort I had stayed at previously that cost twice as much and had abominable standards for their dive staff. The sad thing I also learned in Fiji is that when staying in fancier resorts you also get the “fancier” clientele (i.e. rich people), who sadly often feel very entitled to do whatever they want (like pick up sea stars for their kids) and make all kinds of ludicrous requests. Waidroka caters to a whole different audience of (serious) divers, so if you’re one of them, don’t hesitate to stay here. I genuinely hope to be able to make it back to Waidroka someday soon and will try to bring a bunch of friends along so that they could have as much of a blast as I did. THANK YOU Team Waidroka! The staff - dive masters (James, Jodi, Sam), managers (Lorna and Andy), cooks and servers, housekeeping - everyone is so friendly and helpful, competent and accommodating. We came to dive during a time when the ocean was rough, so the usual dive sites were not available. They took us to more protected sites quite a ways away - just my husband and I - so we could still dive. One place was a nursery and we got to see juvenile fishes I’ve never seen before. Thank you for working hard to make our first foray into diving in Fiji fantastic despite unfavorable weather conditions. You went above and beyond, and I hope to come back again. The resort has a lovely lived in feel that provides all the essentials. Not super fancy, which suited my husband and me just fine.
