Vanuatu represents the very best in a beach holiday experience. No pollution or traffic, only pearly white beaches, modern resorts and all the fun and fervour of a long-deserved break. Often known as ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’, Vanuatu’s 83 islands bring together old-fashioned charm and hospitality of the bygone decades, traditional village life and the unsullied flora and fauna that you can only read about in a magazine.
As soon as travellers land in Port Vila, the magic starts. Located on the main islands of Efate, Port Vila is surrounded by miles of delicate reef and beaches that wows people before they even get off the plane. Espiritu Santo provides amazing views of forest-covered mountains, underground caves and powdery-white sand beaches. The island of Tanna is another highlight with Mt Yasur, a favourite of eco-tourists, adventure lovers and divers alike.
But the main attraction of Vanuatu is the unfailing good nature and hospitality of the people. Together with a range of accommodations and a host of activities, it makes for a gem of a holiday getaway.
Vanuatu boasts 113 distinct languages and innumerable dialects making it one of the most culturally diverse countries on earth. This amazing diversity is a result of 3,000 years of sporadic immigration from many Pacific countries. Split between Northern, Central and Southern Areas each with their unique Rituals, Belefs and Traditions
Adventure – This island destination is unmatched in its number of offerings for adrenaline junkies and for those young at heart. From hiking trails that lead to breathtaking ‘blue holes’ of freshwater caves and waterfalls to zorbing down its hills, there’s something for everybody. Ziplining aficionados will be especially wowed with trails passing miles of mountains and valleys in a matter of minutes. For more relaxed fun, kayaking and stand-up paddling in the tranquil clear waters of the South Pacific Ocean can’t be beat.
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling – Vanuatu has one of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the world. Plentiful sea-life abound its soft coral reefs to woo divers along with massive underwater grottos and caverns. Hideaway Island is known for its amazing snorkelling spots.
Deep-sea Diving – The 22,000-ton wreck of USS President Coolidge off Luganville, not counting the scores of WWII planes and ships (like the Star of Russia) that lie on the seabed, deem Vanuatu as the destination for experiencing deep-sea wonder.
Culture – A village visit will unveil thousands of years of language, culture, traditions and crafts in a day. Learn to weave a traditional basket, know about essential herbs and oils or just enjoy the happiness radiating from a day talking to village elders.
Mele Cascades – One of the most-photographed natural landscapes, the Mele Cascades are a series of waterfalls that end in a freshwater pool. Travellers reach this hidden gem after a spot of hiking through Port Vila’s lush forests. After the hike, a dip in the cool waters is an earned right.
Vanuatu has been blessed with a range of stay options for all travellers. Whether the need is for a backpacker hotel or for a full-service five-star luxury resort, the destination has it all in numbers.
For families and couples wishing to break away from the hum-drum of modern life, the Warwick Le Lagon is a four-star resort next to the beautiful Erakor Lagoon. Offering accommodations from standard rooms to waterfront villas, the resort aims to please. There are also the quaint inns and motels that line the lagoon like Chantilly’s by the Beach and Poppy’s that are perfect for solo travellers and couples.
Vanuatu has a generally sunny climate, warm waters and cool winds throughout the year; but April to October is considered the best time to visit this untouched paradise.
One of the best experiences in Vanuatu is to see the Naghol Land Diving ceremony. From April to June, the village men prove their virility by tying their feet with liana creepers and diving off platforms 60-100 feet high to the ground below. Often considered the precursor to modern bungee-jumping, only a few lucky travellers get to see this ceremony (talk to our South Pacific Specialists on how to arrange a visit).
It is also worth seeing the Tanna Toka dance, which goes on for days and is only permitted when the village chiefs mandate so in the month of October. Another interesting event is the Lukaotem Gud Santo Festival in Luganville, Santo – a two-day music extravaganza perfect for families and couples.

Vanuatu is a South Pacific Ocean nation made up of roughly 80 islands that stretch 1,300 kilometers. The islands offer scuba diving at coral reefs, underwater caverns and wrecks such as the WWII-era troopship SS President Coolidge. Harborside Port Vila, the nation’s capital and economic center, is on the island of Efate. The city is home to the Vanuatu National Museum, which explores the nation’s Melanesian culture.
