About Tanna
From Vanuatu’s capital of Port Vila, it is just a 45-minute flight to the Whitegrass Airport at Tanna. From above, the emerald expanse of Pacific Ocean parts for a small, craggy landmass with abundant forests and a volcano which is perpetually smoking. It is an awe-inspiring sight every time. The island of Tanna is ringed with clear waters of the lightest blue hue and you instinctively know snorkelling and diving would be incomparable.

A walk to the Mount Yasur volcano is memorable in every way. Hiking to the mountain-top, travellers will see other-worldly landscapes; black lava streams frozen solid and variegated strata of rocks. The highlight is of course, the rumbling volcano – it is hissing, perpetually smoking and an occasional spurt of magma bathes the darkening evening sky with vermillion hues. Things To Do
Visiting the tribes of Tanna is an experience unto itself. The locals have very little exposure to the outside world and have rituals and customs (‘kastoms’ in the local lingo) which are endlessly fascinating. The village visits will have guests learning about how the society functions, the gods of millennia past and present and ‘cargo cults’ – where living deities are prayed to for gifts of bounty and happiness. The spirituality of the cults of John Frum, and the tribes in general, is nothing short of riveting!
The marine sanctuary at east of Tanna is a good way to explore the marine diversity of the island. Here, snorkelers can swim around gentle sea turtles and schools of colourful fish. The Yatana Surf Beach is excellent for surfing breaks and dive charters will guide adventurous souls to magnificent underwater grottos and caves. Another must-do item is swimming in one of the several ‘blue holes’ of Vanuatu – formed from flowing magma tunnelling its way to the ocean, they are massive caverns which have filled with fresh water or the sea.
