As of February 2026, the Laucala Island has officially ended its management agreement with COMO Hotels and Resorts, reverting from ‘COMO Laucala Island’ back to its independent branding as Laucala Island. While the partnership with COMO (initiated in 2021) provided a global marketing umbrella, the island’s owner-led management team, under Laucala Island Resort Limited, is now taking back direct operational control.
Given Laucala’s unique scale – 3,500 acres with only 25 residences – the move to independent management allows the property to ensure that its bespoke, ‘no-limit’ service model remains true to the vision of the Mateschitz family.
Along with the management change, Laucala Island Fiji has announced an official closure for the duration of this year. This ‘gap year’ is designated for a comprehensive renovation and structural overhaul of the resort and its assets. While the property has maintained its status as a pinnacle of luxury since its 2008 opening, this major refurbishment aims to modernise the aesthetic and technical infrastructure of the villas and public spaces.
For travel trade partners, this means a total blackout on bookings through December 2026. The closure is being positioned as a ‘rebuilding’ phase, with the owners promising a return to the market in February 2027.
It would be interesting to see how Laucala Island’s year-long renovation and refurbishment transforms a private island resort which is counted amongst one of the most super-luxurious properties in the world.
