‘We’re Bringing Back the Beach’, says Malolo Island Resort, Fiji

As a shot of good news to start off the week with, the Malolo Island Resort has announced that it has officially begun its beach replenishment project. In 2020, Cyclone Harold wreaked havoc across the islands, damaging homes, livelihoods and infrastructure. But the category 4 cyclone also dealt damage to Fiji’s ecosystem, evidenced by Malolo Island’s significant beach erosion. It was a tough blow, but in true Fijian spirit, the resort has been working hard to find a solution. And, it’s thrilling to hear that after extensive planning and consultation, the resort has officially begun its beach replenishment project!

Restoring Paradise: How Malolo Island’s Beach is Making its Return

After consulting with coastal erosion experts and Malolo Island’s local Yaro village community, the resort secured all necessary approvals from the Ministry of Environment. Over the next six months, the resort’s team will be pumping sand from a natural trench directly in front of the property onto the depleted beach sections. The work, with a team working eight hours a day at mid-tides, has already begun – starting near bures 17 and 18 and moving down the beach towards bures 37 and 38.

The resort says the sand pumping and lining process isn’t noisy; resort guests would face minimal disruption, if at all.
