Listen to Fiji Hotels Embrace Eco-Friendly Single-Use Cups for Sustainable Tourism

In a green move, three Fiji hotels and resorts are working with local manufacturers to shift to compostable single-use water and coffee cups. The InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa in Natadola, the Grand Pacific Hotel in Nadi and the Holiday Inn Suva have joined hands to push for sustainable Fiji tourism.

Collaborating with local manufacturers Portion Pak and Rise Beyond the Reef, these hotels are at the forefront of promoting sustainability in the island destination. As part of IHG’s Journey To Tomorrow initiative, this shift sets a remarkable precedent in the hospitality industry. The newly introduced single-use cups feature captivating Fijian-inspired designs by Rise Beyond the Reef, a local non-profit organisation, highlighting the resorts’ commitment to combining sustainability with cultural appreciation. This initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals and reflects a commitment to responsible luxury.

For now, the three resorts are InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa in Natadola, the Grand Pacific Hotel in Nadi and the Holiday Inn Suva.

Portion Pak, with over 23 years of experience in manufacturing eco-friendly products, leads the environmental charge. Their innovative certified home compostable cups replace conventional cups’ laminated plastic lining with a water-based ‘ink’ technology. These cups can compost alongside organic waste, providing a compelling solution to the issue of single-use plastics in the hospitality sector.

“At IHG Hotels & Resorts in Fiji, we believe in making a positive impact. Our transition to compostable single-use water and coffee cups is not just a change in practice, but a statement of our dedication to preserving the natural beauty of Fiji and supporting its communities. This initiative aligns with our broader sustainability goals and reflects our ethos of responsible luxury,” commented Lachlan Walker, Portfolio General Manager – IHG Hotels & Resorts, FNPF Owned Hotels.

Fiji is estimated to import and use 5-10 million takeaway cups annually*, contributing to landfill waste and environmental degradation. Portion Pak’s water and coffee cups and lids offer a game-changing alternative, marking the first time such items can be effectively composted in Fiji. Resorts and hotels can now significantly reduce the use of single-use cups and contribute to a cleaner environment. Portion Pak’s partnership with BioPak, a leader in environmentally-friendly food packaging, has allowed Fiji to be among the pioneering nations to receive this transformative innovation.

Portion Pak’s revolutionary water and coffee cups and lids offer a game-changing alternative, marking the first instance where such items can be effectively composted in Fiji. Larger establishments like resorts stand to eliminate tens of thousands of single-use cups and lids virtually overnight, fostering a cleaner and greener environment.

This eco-friendly transition not only benefits the environment but also supports Fijian charitable organization Rise Beyond the Reef. Vibrant local designs on the cups showcase the rich culture of Fiji, and 5% of each cup’s value goes directly towards supporting Rise Beyond the Reef’s school-based programs. IHG Fiji’s pioneering step towards sustainability signifies a harmonious blend of innovation, culture, and environmental consciousness, reinforcing its position as a leader in the industry and an ambassador for Fiji’s natural resources.
