With multiple cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus being reported across Asia, there are rising concerns amongst stock markets, airlines and travellers of a repeat of COVID-19 crises.
The Fijian government has said that they are monitoring the situation actively and have enhanced surveillance for detection of cases. Professor Biman Prasad, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, said the Ministry of Health, the Permanent Secretary, and their respective teams are monitoring the situation closely. The departments are ready to implement policies, disseminate critical information to the public, and provide funding to proactively stem any potential risks from HMPV. “I think it’s monitoring, alerting our people and those who are travelling to these countries where there may be cases,” he stated.
