Waking up to an endless clear blue Pacific Ocean while a continental breakfast is delivered by canoe is one of the many amazing things typical of a holiday in the French Polynesia. Otherwise known as Tahiti and Her Islands, these five groups of archipelagos form one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world.
With alluring names like Bora Bora, Moorea, Nuku Hiva; this destination provides travellers with craggy mountains, tropical forests, secluded beaches, ancient culture and legendary warmth of the people in one neat package. Each of Tahiti’s 118 islands has its own claim to fame, charm and a host of activities perfect for honeymooners, couples, families and solo travellers. Covering an area as vast as European Union, there are scores of international-standard hotels and resorts dotting the Austral, Marquesas, Tuamotu, Gambier and Society archipelagos.
Despite the stunning beaches, surfing, hiking and scuba diving which draw tourists, it is the Tahitian way of life which is the real secret of this destination. A magical blend of French savoir-faire and Polynesian charm reflected in the music, dance, art and hospitality; it woos travellers into returning over and over again.
Things to Do in French Polynesia
Once travellers have overcome their initial awe and wonder over the sheer beauty of the island’s black sand beaches, miles of clear waters and towering mountains; there are a lot of land and sea-based activities to jump into. From jet-skiing the glassy green waters, riding a horse down the beach, to a wild off-road 4×4 tour in the mountains, we’ve compiled a short list.
Snorkelling, scuba diving, and surfing: Tahiti and Her Islands contain some of the best dive spots, vast underwater coral gardens, surf breaks and marine life to be found on earth. For surfers and divers, it is one of the definitive bucket-list items to tick off. Hotspots? Bora Bora, Huahine, Tahaa, Moorea, Raiatea… the list goes on. For more adrenaline-pumping water sports, there is always jet-skiing and kite-surfing the gin-clear waters.
Outrigger canoeing and sailing: Learn how Polynesians, arguably the best of mariner cultures, covered the vast Pacific Ocean in simple outrigger canoes using the stars for direction. Chartering a yacht or a catamaran for a day trip is also a hard ‘yes’!
Bicycling, horseback riding and helicopter rides: For honeymooners, couples and families, the effort to step away from the big city life and connect is gilded by these fun beachside activities. A helicopter ride will have travellers exploring the hidden valleys, waterfalls and rivers from a bird’s eye view. But if you’re up for something a little more extreme, a four-wheel jeep safari is a more adrenaline-pumping option to the above.
Spear and deep-sea fishing, wind surfing, shark and ray feeding: For those looking for a thrill, there is no place like Tahiti. Dive with professionals to get up and close with whales in the Austral Islands, feed majestic manta rays off Bora Bora or go kite-surfing– it’s your choice all the way!
Cultural tours and village trips: There are museums, ancient maraes (temples), village visits and other cultural experiences that travellers can indulge in to know how thousands of years of history have melded to create the Polynesian way of life as we know it.

Best time to Visit French Polynesia
The best time to sample the wonders of French Polynesia is between May and October, when the weather is cool with crisp winds soothing sun-tanned visitors.
For the culturally-conscious, there are a few occasions where they can visit Tahiti and experience the best of Polynesian culture. One of the most important cultural congregations is called Heiva i Tahiti. It is held during the three months of June, July and August to celebrate ancient traditions and numerous dance, singing and sports competitions are organised. Tahitians come from far islands to display their crafts and compete in the events over the week-long affairs.
Tahiti is also home to the international Outrigger Canoe Race, called the Hawaiki Nui. Set in November, competitors from over 100 canoeing nations race from the island of Huahine to Raiatea, Tahaa, and Bora Bora in a majestic spectacle of human endurance.
