So remote – Marquesas has its own time-zone!

About Nuku Hiva

About Nuku Hiva

The northern-most of Marquesas islands is so remote that not only does it have its own time zone, it is the furthest island from any continental landmass. Around 900 km or 3.5 hours away by flight, Nuku Hiva does not have its cousins’ flashy pearly white beaches or coral reefs. What it has is forested volcanic mountains, craggy and windswept cliffs and rare black sand beaches.

Nuku Hiva’s wild, untrammelled beauty is immediately felt. From its horses galloping across to the majestic waterfalls misting the valley – it’s a prehistoric dreamland which has prompted greats like Herman Melville and Paul Gauguin to produce some of their works. It’s people and villages hold centuries of legends and history of settlers, missionaries, explorers, warriors and more coming to the island’s shores. Wander across ancient burial grounds, ceremonial cannibalistic rituals (not practiced any more, thank you very much!), the villages, fishing spots and just soak in visuals from every rock and crag. To spend a week here is to understand why Tahiti and Her Islands were settled – after all, this island is called the ‘roof of Polynesia’!

Things to Do in Nuku Hiva

The Marquesas are a time-capsule in themselves. Even with travellers coming and going, it feels like the islands freeze time itself – pristine rainforests, culture and legends going back to the very settling of Tahiti and Her Islands by brave Polynesians on their outrigger canoes. Which you can try your hand on, there are plenty in Nuku Hiva and we can arrange one in a jiffy. Anaho’s black sand beach is as rare as it is unique – lining the island against the crystal-clear blue of the sea, it’s a surreal sight.

Then, make a beeline – we’re kidding, there is no line in Nuku Hiva – for the Hakaui Valley’s Vaipo waterfall. They are the third tallest in the world and although it doesn’t sound as great as Niagara, these are breathtakingly beautiful in their own right. Travellers will hear the crash and the mist far away from the actual sight and seeing the waterfall making a shimmering line of white against the green and the rocky grey is a sight to last a lifetime. There are plenty of discovery tours, from the cultural insights into the life of the villagers to knowing more about the wood carvers of the island – they are the undisputed best in Tahiti. Adventure lovers will love diving tours of the underground caves, hiking, horseback tours of the jungle and the scuba-diving in general. All in all, Nuku Hiva is as off the beaten track as you can get!

Hotels & Resorts in Nuku Hiva

As we said before, this island is well-connected by daily flights, but it’s still very remote. There are a couple of hotels and resorts dotting the island around Taiohae, but please don’t expect five-star retreats. Nuku Hiva’s riches lies in its pristine beauty preserved over the centuries, not in thread-count and Mbps. Check out Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge – it’s a beautiful place to relax and soak in the island’s charms. Then, there is the Aranui 5 cruise line which brings eager travellers and necessary supplies to the island. But for that, you need to check out our Cruises page.
