Resorts in Rangiroa
About Rangiroa
The second-largest atoll in the world, Rangiroa’s lagoon holds scores of divine scuba-diving hotspots. A hidden pearl amongst Tahiti and Her Islands, it is less than an hour’s flight from Fa’a, Papeete. It’s coral reefs, plentiful marine life and sheer tranquillity adds up to an unforgettable South Pacific holiday. Snorkelling, diving, kayaking, surfing… everything has a new benchmark in Rangi (as it’s affectionately called by locals!).
This island paradise in the Tuamotus is well-connected to the outside world, with two to three flights daily from Fa’a Airport in Papeete. Rangiroa has sand bars of such white intensity that it has often been described as white frosting on a pale blue layer cake. At low tides, travellers can often walk across the sand bars to other islets or ‘motus’. The lagoon is no deeper than 10 metres, so the shallows and deeps make for unbelievable palette of blues inside the archipelago.
Things to Do in Rangiroa
When talking about activities and entertainment, there is no big city-like nightlife in Rangiroa. But what the atoll has in spades – is diving and water-based recreation. Drift dives at Tiputa Pass will see travellers ‘flying’ over vast swathes of multi-coloured coral gardens, some of them thousands of years old. Snorkellers in Moana-Uri will play with pods of wild dolphins, sea turtles and gentle manta rays, while our South Pacific Specialist can sign adventure-lovers for shark dives with hammerheads, black-tips and grey reef sharks. At Rangiroa, finding a deserted island is just a matter of kayaking away in any direction.
Romance in Rangiroa
With more than 400 islets and motus, beautiful beaches and miles of glassy blue waters – sparking romance is never a problem here. Plus, the atoll is not yet become a major tourist attraction – so the pace of life is easy, couples can get oodles of privacy and only birdsong and waves punctuate the quiet. Out of the water, we would recommend couples to visit Les Sables Roses, where the pink sand beach is perfect for a lazy picnic.
Hotels and Resorts
Despite being off the beaten path, Rangiroa has plenty of choice when it comes to hotels and resorts. For a quaint Polynesian home-like atmosphere, check out our Pensions and Motels in Avatoru, the main town in Rangiroa. Stepping up the luxe factor, the atoll has superb overwater bungalows at the Kia Ora Le Sauvage, where travellers can live in true island-style. The Le Maitai Rangiroa also offers international levels of comfort and amenities, besides the default excellent environs.
