About New Plymouth
Called ‘New’ Plymouth after England’s settlers from Plymouth, Dover came over, this quiet town has been a model of … well, almost everything! Blessed with perpetually sunny skies, with Mount Taranaki’s snow-dusted conical cap looming in the back, this lovely little city has been nominated as one of the best places to live several times over. To be nominated as sister cities with pretty Japanese towns such as Mishima and Shizuoka is as big a dab as a place can throw up, we say.
Even after the oil boom, New Plymouth has now highlighted its natural beauty and artistic capacity. It is the centre of the Taranaki hub of commerce, industry and culture.
Things to do
As the list goes, there’s quite a lot going for New Plymouth. The first off would definitely be to ride and hike up the mountain. In fact, if flying into this city on a clear day, travellers area in for a treat to see Mt Taranaki on one side and the Pacific on another. The snow-dusted peak is quite high up – although the visitor station is at around 900 metres elevation, the peak is around 1,600 metres above sea level.
Then, the city itself is a cyclist’s paradise – the local government has made extensive cycling tracks around the city. From the cold treats of the mountain, we recommend sliding down to New Plymouth’s many Instagram-able beaches. Check out Ngamotu Beach near Ocean View Parade and the Oakura Beach off Jan’s Terrace. Nature lovers would love exploring the bush walks at the Pukekura Park, the city’s botanical gardens and a guided walk along the Waiwhakaiho River. Of course, you’ll also get to see the city’s beloved son and international artist Len Lye’s Wind Wand swaying to the breezes – it’s not going to be overlooked (wink)!
How to reach New Plymouth
From Wellington, New Plymouth is but an hour’s flight away, while travellers flying in from Auckland will reach the city 10 minutes quicker. Driving in from Wellington? It’s a lovely drive of under 5 hours along New Zealand’s butter-smooth highways.
