About Nelson

A modest-sized city set above the country’s capital of Wellington, Nelson (or nelson Tasman, as the region is known as) has Australasia’s single biggest port. But, it’s also heavily invested in protected forests, horticultural hothouses and tourism. Technically, this little city was the first to be inhabited way back in 1841, although pretty Christchurch takes the official mantle around 1858. Nelson’s population also boasts of a prolific amount of artists and craftspeople, including traditional, contemporary and Māori.

There’s a lot of experiences on tap ranging from cultural to natural delights to artistic. Check out the Things to Do section for a better idea on all the fun holiday itineraries that can be stitched together on a holiday in Nelson, New Zealand!

Things to Do

There’s the Abel Tasman National Park for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts – it’s great for hiking, kayaking and swimming. Post a day of fun at the park, there’s nothing like widing down the day sampling the craft beers down at the local pub. True adrenaline junkies should book a sky-diving session, which will see them floating over hills, forests, the sea and both the North and South Islands stretching below. Oh, and the ‘four rivers plain’ white-water rafting tour.

For families, there’s nothing better than packing a picnic of cold sandwiches to have while enjoying the sights around the Nelson Lakes National Park. Then, there’s the Te Waikoropupu Springs, which are the Southern Hemisphere’s largest coldwater springs, the Nelson Classic Car Museum and the bird sanctuary off Farewell Spit.
