Aitutaki is a stark contrast of colours, with the dark blue of the Pacific Ocean being displaced by an almost perfect triangle of a light cobalt lagoon. Check out our Aitutaki holiday deals here!
For every traveller’s bucket-list of places to visit, Aitutaki features on the hall of fame. It is a stark contrast of colours, with the dark blue of the Pacific Ocean being displaced by an almost perfect triangle of a light cobalt lagoon. Lining the triangle are banks of soft coral, inside which lie 15 vivid green ‘motus’, the largest being Aitutaki. Flying in, it is one of the prettiest sights to behold on earth.
The lagoon takes about an hour to cross by boat, and its picture perfect shallow azure waters filled with tropical fish and coral gardens make for breath-taking sights. A flight from the Rarotonga Airport will see you over Aitutaki and the pristine O’otu Beach in less than an hour. The largest of the islands is divided into numerous settlements and villages, while the smaller islands have been converted to resorts and lodges.
Tourism has modernised this patch of paradise a lot, but it isn’t commercialised in any sense. There is limited electricity, scant Internet, very limited network, some satellite TV, cable, and no Tinder. To make up for the loss of modern distractions, there is swimming in the clearest waters, snorkelling with shoals of colourful fish, diving, kite surfing, hiking the nature trails and generally lounging by the beach with a chilled cocktail beside you.
