About Tongatapu

About Tongatapu

The island of Tongatapu stretches for 257 sq kilometres, hosts the capital of the country Nuku’alofa and is a paradise both in terms of natural beauty and cultural preservation. It is close to the Fanga’uta and Fangakaku lagoons, which have spectacular, crystal-clear waters and are rich in biodiversity. These lagoons have recently been declared as nature reserves as they are breeding grounds for many of the rare birds and fish. The northern side of Tongatapu has some of the best white sand beaches in Tonga and travellers will almost always find one to themselves. Additionally, there have been found archaeological remains and Lapita pottery dating back as much as 900-850 BCE – a veritable treasure trove for history buffs.

Things to do

There are daily excursions from Tongatapu to Nuku’alofa where travellers can indulge in swimming, sun-bathing and snorkelling off its beaches. Then, history buffs can visit the Ha’amonga ’A Maui near the village of Niutōua. It’s an ancient trilithon made of coral and limestone rock and the lore associated with the relic will fascinate travellers. Mu’a is also a do-worthy item while exploring Tongatapu. It is the site of tombs of past kings and a guided tour will shed light in the history of the island and its rulers. For a fun distraction, we absolutely recommend visiting the natural blow-holes near the village of Houma. There is nothing so much fun as watching giant geysers of salty seawater spout up between black rocky crevasses! Nature enthusiasts should surely go on a tour to see the flying foxes at Kolovai. And for something very unique, ask us to book you a tour to the ‘Anahulu stalactite caves. North of Fatumu village, it contains an underground freshwater swimming pool with waters so clear and brilliant, it feels like a fluorescent sheet of glass – very Lord of the Rings!
