Set on the ‘Atata Island (yes, the apostrophe is a part of the spelling…) off the coast of Nuku’alofa, the resort is spread over eight acres and offers 23 villas for families, couples, honeymooners and adventurers. Peaceful, quiet even by local standards, the Royal Sunset Island Resort gently washes off tech overload and deadlines with beautiful golden sand beaches, beachfront accommodations surrounded by lush vegetation and excellent activities.
From the airport, travellers have to take a half-an-hour cab ride and a 20-minute ferry transfer to reach the ‘Atata Island. Set steps away from the beach, each of the accommodations offers views of the ocean, gardens and the lagoon. Travellers can choose from Budget Fales, Western Fales, Atata Mini Suites, 2-Bedroom Mini Suites and 2-Bedroom Family Fales. And before you ask, ‘fales’ is local for villas. All units feature queen-size beds, ensuite bathrooms with shower, living space with furniture and patios leading to the beach. Additional amenities include ceiling fans (no air-con though, but nobody has ever needed it here!), mini-fridge, free WiFi and towels.
The Royal Sunset Island Resort’s restaurant and bar is excellent at cooking up local and international fares for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Both are open-air venues, with high-vaulted thatched Polynesian architecture.
Besides the above, the resort is also sought-after for its plethora of activities and experiences. From swimming and kayaking in the wonderfully warm waters to snorkelling in the reefs off the beach, enjoy the multi-coloured flora and fauna under the waves. Then, the staff also hosts a reef walking tour, regular cultural nights, whale watching tours, island tours, surfing charters and so on. Check out the Things to Do tab for more activities.
