When Small is Beautiful!
Resorts in Alofi
Heaven for whale-watching
Tours & Adventures
There are a number of tour operators set around Alofi, just ask around or talk to our South Pacific Specialists to know more. Niue’s crystal-clear waters go deep rapidly as compared to other island destinations – so if you’re new to diving and snorkelling, be careful and get a guide. Most serious anglers across the word regard this tiny country as one of the best destinations for deep-sea fishing. Mountain-biking, trail riding, hiking through the lush jungles are especially amazing. Plus, Niueans are proud of the fact that there are no poisonous flora and fauna posing any danger to travellers. We would recommend travellers to attend any of the villages’ show days. It’s full of dances, performances, stalls with food and woven souvenirs – plus, the locals are so warm and inviting! When, and not if, you get an invitation to visit a local’s home for tea and snacks, do accept. It’s an insult
There are cabs and the resorts themselves will provide for transfers, tours et all, but the best way by far is to rent bicycles and explore the island on your own. There is the beach by Avatele, but Niue’s craggy limestone coastline and cave system are far more impressive. Besides bicycling and walking it, visitors can also hitch rides off the friendly locals. But the main draw of Niue would be whale-watching. Niue is one of the very, very few countries where adventurers can get up close and personal with these gentle leviathans. Registered tour operators will even get you swimming with the whales at a safe distance.
Caving in Alofi
Due to its limestone bedrock and composition, the island looks like a bit like swiss cheese! There are hundreds of caves and subterranean chambers criss-crossing Niue, giving caving a life, history and even mythology of its own. Go for a guided trek down the caves – you will come across underground pools so clear it looks like a scene straight out of a Lord of the Rings movie, relics and more. An added bonus are the tiny white sand beaches in the nooks and crannies of the island. Besides the main beach at Avatele, there are no major ones. Just tiny ones which can be yours for the whole day!
Hotels and Resorts
The airport is less than two kilometres from the centre of Alofi and all resorts are either located in the capital or around it. Needless to say, reaching any motel/resort is a breeze. The town covers two villages – Alofi North and Alofi South. Of course, it also has most of all government offices and the seat of power for the ‘Rock of Polynesia’, i.e. Niue.
There are a number of affordable resorts, hotels, motels and home-stays dotting Niue, more so in Alofi. Just check out our seasonal specials for Alofi accommodations and Niue holiday deals – our packages bundle in discounted flights, stays, transfers, breakfast and even bonuses like meal plans, tours and free nights!
