The 46 bures have been designed as plantation-style duplex housing, blending traditional Fijian high-vaulted ceilings and modern touches like king-size beds, air-conditioning, turn-down service, premium toiletries and linens. The bures located on the resort’s inner perimeter are surrounded by landscaped gardens and hibiscus shrubs; while the ones lining the beach are situated with great swimming just a few feet away from the doorstep.
Owning the philosophy of ‘disconnect to reconnect’, there are no TVs or radios in the accommodations at Malolo Island Resort; only the whisper of balmy Fijian winds, the swish of palm trees and the rolling lullaby of waves lapping the shore. And the occasional thump of falling coconuts. The island and its waters form a protected marine zone to preserve its marvellous underwater coral gardens and variety of aquatic fauna. Needless to say, snorkellers will discover an underwater paradise to explore endlessly. Some of the coral formations, which have taken decades to form, resemble miniature explosions of colour frozen in the warm Pacific waters.
Aside from the incredible swimming and snorkelling right off the beach, the resort also hosts numerous water-sports such as water-skiing, donut rides, wake-boarding and banana boat rides. There is also great parasailing to be done, where views and photo opportunities of the great Malolo Island below are second to none.
Lead by Executive Chef Ryan Ward, the wining and dining arena hits a fine note for all travellers. The Terrace Restaurant is again reminiscent of colonial-era dining pavilions, with spacious seating arrangements overlooking two of the resort’s pools. The menu showcases Pacific Rim cuisine as well as Asian, Chinese, Indian and Thai. Saturdays are traditional lovo feast evenings, where dances and songs accompany slow-cooked Fijian delicacies. Treetops is more formal as a restaurant venue with a daily-changing menu at the Malolo Island Resort. It overlooks the resort’s gardens and the adults’ pool; making a perfect venue for small group dinners and events.
As the name suggests, the Beach Bar is set alongside the island’s edge – dishing out salads, pizzas, burgers and a variety of gourmet fare along with cocktails. Besides the Beach Bar and Treetops, there is also the swim-up bar at the adults’ pool. And for a romantic evening, a private dinner under the stars with a serenading guitarist is sure to set the mood right.
