The Le Meridien Ile des Pins, or Isle of Pines as it’s known, is one of the few five-star resorts located in seven-star settings. New Caledonia is surrounded by the largest barrier reef in the world, a delicate marine eco-system protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The resort sits on a private island in the centre of the barrier reef, surrounded by the beautiful Oro Bay.
Reaching the resort is a singular pleasure in itself. From the Tontouta International Airport in Noumea, visitors have a choice of taking a plane from the domestic airport Magenta to the Ile des Pins Airport; or a fast catamaran ride from Noumea to Port de Kuto, a short car-hop away from Ile des Pins. Either way, the vast swathes of deep verdigris ocean broken by the dark green of the many isles is a sight to behold. The resort’s island is surrounded by palm and pine trees, lined by soft white sand. Limited to a scarce 48 super-luxurious rooms and suites, the boutique resort is one of the very few places where travellers can snorkel right off the beach.
The resort is minutes away from a natural saltwater swimming pool, where guests can snorkel away the days exploring the shoals of fishes inhabiting it. They also have the option of a lovely picnic on the Nokanhui atoll, where swimming with turtles is a must-do activity. For hiking enthusiasts, a trek to the easily-accessible Mount N’ga is an especial treat as the views of the island from the top are truly selfie-worthy! There are scores of fun activities that the resort organises on a daily basis such as cooking and weaving classes, which are worth a try anytime.
For gourmands, Le Meridien’s La Pirogue restaurant specialises in local and French cuisine and the Longitude 167 Bar is perfect for winding down exciting days.
