With just 7 bures spread out on the water’s edge, Sau Bay Resort and Spa is a tranquil offering beckoning travellers to Fiji in search of peace and quiet. Plus, a no ‘children under 10’ policy for most parts of the year also helps. A sensory experience as much as a getaway, guests can expect to hear the gentle lapping of the water, the breeze in their hair and the scent of wildflowers in it. There’s also gastronomic experiences to had over Fijian and fusion fare and a curated beverage selection with which to wash it down with.
There are four accommodation categories at the Sau Bay Resort, each offering choicest views of the surroundings and modern conveniences. Once inside, guests can expect an island-inspired interior — soft colours, timber floors and plenty of natural light and air. Every bure features a king bed with options for additional bedding. Modern amenities and contemporary ensuites add a degree of comfort while novelties like granite wet bar and outdoor shower in certain stays add a touch of indulgence. Each bure here is ocean-facing, which means guests get to soak in the tranquility of the calm waters and the cool sea breeze that blows in. Come nightfall, the bay reflects the sea of stars above and makes for a poignant and mesmerising moment in equal parts.
The rooms have common facilities like WiFi and tea/coffee making facilities. For more details, please check out the ‘Rooms at the Sau Bay Resort and Spa’ section above.
The resort offers an al-fresco dining area instead of a traditional restaurant. Located on the edge of the bay, here patrons can enjoy the best of Fijian cuisines, tropical cocktails and more. Breakfasts are an a-la-carte affair with fresh fruits, cereals, eggs made to order and more. Lunch and dinner have guests biting into local delicacies made using locally sourced produce and herbs from the resort’s organic garden. A rotating menu keeps things fresh everyday and there’s no fixed time to eat, meal times are at the guest’s convenience.
A Taveuni holiday in Fiji can be laid back, doesn’t mean it has to be. The limpid waters of the Sau bay invites guests to explore its depths. Snorkelling, swimming and paddle boarding are common activities that holidaymakers love to indulge in. Some also kayak to the mangroves in the vicinity. Sau Bay Resort is close to the Rainbow reef and has its very own dive shop. That means exploring some of the best corals that Fiji has to offer, often for days on end. The resort is particularly close to acclaimed dive-sites like the Great Wall, meaning divers spend less time on the boat travelling and more time in the water. Sau Bay Resort also offers PADI certification for a wide range of levels and underwater photography workshops too!
Back on dry land, guests can look forward to similarly enjoyable experiences. Hiking and bush walks are the preferred way to work up an appetite as well as learn about the local flora and fauna—taveuni, Fiji’s garden island, has enough of that to engage curious travellers. In fact, a Taveuni holiday is incomplete without a view of the elusive Tagimoucia flower (read our blog on Tagimoucia blooms being one of the rarest in the world!). Mangrove nature walks are an hour’s affair, usually a complimentary guided tour where guests learn the role these coastal groves play in environmental conservation. Visitors can also check out the Moka in the resort’s premises — an ancient Fijian mechanism of catching fish with stones, that still works and is best experienced.
Speaking of culture, no Fiji holiday is complete without a village visit. What often begins as a detour ends up as a masterclass in Fijian culture and ethos. Village visits are a warm affair with the famed Fijian hospitality on full display. Guests can expect a Lovo feast, partake in the kava ceremony, visit indigenous workshops where artisans craft keepsakes, soak in Fijian fables and enjoy Meke performances before coming back to the resort. Not all days have to be so adrenaline-packed, though. Leisure and pampering go hand in hand with island time and holidaymakers can spend their time with beach side picnics, sunbathing, attending cooking classes and enjoying relaxing massages at the spa.
With just seven bures on Sau bay’s sands, this is a Fijian holiday for travellers prioritising peace over excitement. Each accommodation is a standalone unit, meaning couples and families have the privacy they need to reconnect and recharge. The breathtaking views are an icing on the cake and the wide range of activities ensures there’s something for everyone.
