About Vava’u

About Vava’u

Vava’u is a group of islands made when the Oceanic tectonic raised coral reefs high enough to form islands millions of years ago. Utu Vava’u is the largest island with Neiafu as its capital. For bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts the island has over 11 endemic bird species! Vava’u also contains the Mount Talau national park, full of tropical flora and fauna including pandanus and mulberry trees from which the natives’ tapa cloth is woven. Pangai is the second-largest island, with excellent white sand beaches and secluded coves. The snorkelling and swimming is simply fantastic here! For whale-watching enthusiasts, hook a left to the Hunga island, just 35 mins from Neiafu harbour. Humpback whales come around this island’s perennially warm waters to mate and calve, making for sublime tours.

Things to do

There are several boat tours and day trips around the island. The Mariner’s Cave is an especially great day-tour. It is accessible via an underwater tunnel and the experience is just fab. For couples, finding secluded beaches will never be a problem in Vava’u. The usual complement of snorkelling, kayaking, diving, sailing is mandatory. Basically, any and all water-sports in Vava’u is superlative by default. Then, as the icing on the cake, travellers can opt for whale-watching tours from June to November. Swimming with turtles and porpoises is an added bonus. Kitesurfing and dep-sea fishing are also racking up a rising number of fans around the globe. Our favourite? Try a tasting session of the Tongan vanilla – the fertile soil makes for vanilla beans like you’ve never experienced!
