The resort is placed on a handkerchief-sized, 6.5-acre coral atoll of an island, which is on the southern-most extremity of Vava’u group of islands in Tonga. From the mainland, it’s a 50-minute domestic hop away to the island. A lot many magazines and websites have praised the silky white sand beaches, the crystal-blue waters surrounding the island, the whales playing around… all this has to be seen to judge the cumulative effect of this beautiful hideaway in Tonga.

The Mounu Island Resort has only four accommodations on its island. Yes, just four – because it guarantees peace, privacy and attention to guests. There are two spacious standard ‘fales’, a Superior Fale and a Honeymoon Fale. Pronounced ‘farley’, the word means ‘house’ in Tongan language. And now you’ve learnt a bit more about the country! Each of the accommodation choices feature spacious bedrooms with double beds or twin beds, ensuite bathrooms, handmade furniture and furnishings, along with an oversized sun deck. All the four fales are connected to the main building via bush walkways.

The resort also has a nice little restaurant and Moby Dick Bar to cater to guests’ gastronomical pleasures. But food and wine, although quite good, isn’t why Mounu Island Resort is sought after.

From late July to November, the resort island is surrounded by huge whales who come to Tonga’s warm waters as a part of their annual migration. In this period, they calve and Mounu Resort’s guests have front row seats to daily shows of playing whales. The resort runs tours and snorkel dives where travellers can go up close and personal with these gentle leviathans. Besides the above, the resort has pristine white sand beaches, gin-clear waters, excellent soft coral reefs – swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, kite surfing and fishing is simply off the charts.
