One of the 12 islands north of Tonga’s capital of Nuku’alofa, the only way to describe Fafa is gorgeous and pristine. Due to its stretches of coral reefs and bountiful marine life, the island and the lagoon has been deemed a special protected zone by the government. Once travellers land in Nuku’alofa, they are taken to the nearby wharf at Faua. From there, it’s a half-an-hour sail to the island of Fafa and all the beauty that surrounds it.
18 acres of sun-kissed palm trees and tropical forests cover the island, with the resort nestling on the western edge. There are only 13 bungalows or ‘fales’ on the island, giving guests oodles of privacy and long stretches of secluded white sand beaches. Each of the spacious bungalows are built on the philosophy of ‘being close to nature’ and incorporate solar power, energy consumption schedules and natural ventilation. From the Superior Fales to the Honeymoon Fale, guests are treated to traditional high-vaulted thatched roofs, matted leaf partitions and attached bathrooms with tropical outside shower stalls.
