Resorts in Gizo
About Gizo
Set on the island of Ghizo, the town of Gizo (note the difference!) is the capital of Solomon Islands’ Western Province. With a population just inching above 6,000, Gizo is a warm, seaside town with a rich history, fantastic diving and peaceful beaches. Once travellers land at Honiara, Gizo is about an hour and half away (stopping at other picturesque islands on the way). The town and the island are known for the rich marine diversity, submerged WWII wrecks and are therefore, a favourite of diving enthusiasts from across the world. For solo travellers, couples and diving enthusiasts looking for an off-beat island paradise, Gizo would be counted amongst our top 5 favourites!
Things to Do
Anything related to water-sports will be superb by default in Gizo. It is a local boast that divers can expect to see over 270 species of marine life on a single tank dive! From sharks to pelagic fish to barracuda and schools of tropical fish, divers can spend hours and hours underwater and not get bored (Do check the ‘Grand Central’ diving hotspot!). Then, there is the wreck diving. Ask for dive charters to visit the famous underwater resting place of the WWII Japanese transport ship Toa Maru and other wrecks WWII aircraft. For a class in contemporary history, take a day-tour of Kennedy Island just off Gizo. This was where former American president John F. Kennedy was ship-wrecked with 11 other seamen on duty aboard the PT-109. Remains of the transport cruiser has been discovered and the island is a popular diving day-tour. For history buffs who want to learn about the island’s native lore, we suggest a village tour!

Despite its remoteness, Gizo has its fair complement of modern beachfront resorts. Check out Fatboys, which is known for its stellar diving sites, along with fabulous wining and dining options.
