About New Zealand

About New Zealand

Want an great example of what an ideal mix of First World advancement, old-world Maori culture and pristine natural beauty would look like? New Zealand!

This country consists of two major islands and around 600 small islands/islets/ day beds.
The larger landmasses, innovatively named North Island and South Island, host most of New Zealand’s population, attractions and experiences. Incredibly beautiful, New Zealand often ranks amongst the most beautiful countries in the world, it’s larger sibling Australia and flashier ones like Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu. Yes, the LoTR trilogy and Peter Jackson did highlight it like no other vehicle, but travellers are amazed to find that the movies only showcased the natural beauty of the country – there’s so much more to discover. From the Polynesian offshoot of Maori culture to an amazing wealth of adventure sports and experiences, holidays in New Zealand are more than just pretty wallpapers!

Culture & History in New Zealand

For its size, Aotearoa – which is New Zealand’s culturally-correct name – has a very rich, colourful tapestry of history. Did you know that, because of its remoteness, this country was one of the last places to be ‘humanised’? Earliest human settlements are dated around 1200s, which translates to around 80 million years where the biological purity of the islands was undisturbed. This is why New Zealand, along with New Caledonia, has one of the highest numbers of endemic flora and fauna! Then, the box of surprises doesn’t stop there. The Polynesian sailed over and became what we know (and love!) as the Maori. Although the illustrious Abel Tasman claims rights as the first New World sighting of the islands in 1642, significant European contact only happened a century later with Captain James Cook.Today, the majority of Kiwis are of European descent and the admirable cultural assimilation of European and Maori ideals are a standard of diversity and unity. New Zealand takes pride in being one of the safest, freest and beautiful-est (!!) countries in the world

For a proper tour of New Zealand and everything it has to offer, a month’s getaway is recommended… but, in the interest of returning back to families – return trips can always be made. There are a lot of activities and experiences on land and on water, is what we’re trying to say. Starting off, this country is a paradise in terms of beautiful landscapes. From snow-capped mountains, sun-dappled pastures to fast-flowing rivers, rumbling volcanoes and picturesque beaches – there’s something for every traveller to fall in love with.

Nature-lovers and outdoorsy travellers will fall in love with forest hikes (also called bush-walks), bird-watching and dolphin-watching tours, boating, canoeing and sailing. Additionally, adrenaline junkies will find New Zealand their spirit home! The home of bungee-jumping, river jet-boating, abseiling, scuba-diving, gliding (this is arguably one of the world’s best locations for soaring/gliding), hang-gliding and so on. Check out New Zealand’s top experiences launching from Auckland, Rotorua and Christchurch. (Yes, everyone knows about the LoTR tours, we just didn’t mention it…)

Fair warning, New Zealand is a meteorologist’s worst nightmare – in the space of 24 hours, one can easily experience all four seasons. But as fair warnings go, the weather is fair enough to indulge in anything any day. Because the country and it’s two islands are surrounded by such massive water-bodies, it gets more than its share of trade winds. So, it gets a temperate climate with days of sudden drizzles, windy afternoons and pleasant evenings. Best advice: Remember to pack a wind-cheater, wellingtons but no umbrellas! Besides the above, travellers should be very comfortable in summer-weight clothes. Hot Tip: Every March, Auckland hosts Pasifika – a mega-festival of everything South Pacific. With dances, performances and events for days, it is a must-experience event for the experiential traveller. Also, you can check out our blogs on New Zealand to see if we have the same bucket-list items to explore!
