About Savaii
Savaii is the biggest island in the Samoan group. But that’s the least in its street of fame. Home to the largest shield volcano in the South Pacific, Savaii is both mountainous and surrounded by coral reefs – making it very unique, indeed. Set around 90 minutes apart from its smaller cousin Apia, Savaii is decades removed from the former’s modernity. Here, travellers can feel the Fa’a Samoa, or the Samoan way of life, envelope them. Peaceful, easy-going islanders will wave as you cycle or drive by, often pointing out the right shop, beach or restaurant for you to hang. Essentially, Savaii is idyllic heart of Samoa.
History
Savaii has been regarded as the very heart of the Polynesian culture and Fa’a Samoa, so it is very important in Samoan folklore and songs. Legends, myths and stories originate from the hills and dales of this island – enduring centuries to this day and age.
