About Niue

About Niue

About Niue

As the island is a giant coral atoll, its geography, coast line and vistas are wildly unique. Steep limestone cliffs fall sharply away to form huge stone arches and massive grottos washed by the clearest emerald waters of the Pacific Ocean. Along with Tonga, Niue counts among the few places in the world where travellers can sit in an open-air bar and see humpback whales breaching just a little way off-shore.

A three-and-half hour flight from Auckland sees travellers land at the Niue International Airport, which is the only airport. From swimming with dolphins, diving, snorkelling, exploring the massive caves, nature hikes, cultural tours and yachting, there are a ton of fun activities which will make the days float by. Travellers come here because they’ve heard about the crystal-clear waters, amazing scuba-diving, snorkelling and whale-watching, but the real gem of Niue is the friendly nature of the people.

From massive underwater monoliths, caverns and caves to the vast coral reefs that provide a home to the island’s innumerable marine life – Niue is a diver’s paradise. Diving enthusiasts and newbies alike are encouraged to explore Avatule Beach, Limu Pools and the beautiful Matapa Chasm. Then, Niue is one of the very, very few countries where travellers can watch whales and even swim with them. From July to October, tour operators guide visitors for a magical sighting of these gentle giants. Even from the shore, Niue’s deep waters ensure whale sightings from as close as 50 feet away! Also, with deep-water fishing right off Niue’s craggy shores, anglers do not even have to get into a boat to bag giant sailfish, skipjack and yellowfin tuna or any of the prized black, blue or striped marlins. Then, Niue’s vast subterranean caves are the largest and most complex in the whole South Pacific region. Explore the gigantic Keyhole formation, many other multi-coloured caves and how they’ve become intrinsic elements in Niue’s history and legends.

Best Time to Visit Niue

Best Time to Visit Niue

Travel magazines call Niue ‘outrageously scenic’, which is very true. Travellers will see the countryside covered in dark green tropical forests, which abruptly gives way to grey/white limestone cliffs outlining the island’s shape against the pale blue of the Pacific Ocean. The best time to visit this beautiful nation is during summer, from April to October.

Culturally speaking, there is no bound time to visit Niue. As a rule, the locals never need a reason to come together, feast, sing or dance – and everybody’s welcome! Each of the island’s 14 villages have an annual show-day where they bring out the best of pandanus weavings, arts, crafts, dance and sport along with food stalls. So, regardless what time travellers visit, there is always a show-day around the corner. Visiting the village during this time is especially amazing as one sees the best of Niue’s culture at a go.
