Lining the triangular lagoon are banks of soft coral, inside which lie 15 vivid green ‘motus’, the largest being Aitutaki. Flying in, it is one of the loveliest sights to behold on earth. The lagoon takes about an hour to cross by boat, and its picture postcard shallow azure waters filled with tropical fish and coral gardens make for breath-taking sights. A flight from the Rarotonga Airport will see you over Aitutaki and the pristine O’otu Beach in less than an hour. Tourism has modernised this patch of paradise a lot, but it isn’t commercialised in any sense.
