The SS Thorfinn is a 52 metre (170
feet) floating resort for divers - a purposefully converted former Norwegian whale hunter
which is based in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia.
The Thorfinn, a pioneer of Pacific live-aboards, was one of the first such ships conceived
and operated principally for sports divers. Spacious accommodations, lounges, whirl pool
spa, and continuous diving options are a feature of the Thorfinn.
Lower guest rooms are reduced in number, and each has been restructured to accommodate a queen bed and a single bed, large private toilet and shower rooms, two wash basins, a multi-system TV monitor/VCR, and CD/Cassette stereo systems |
| A large guest lounge on 'C' Deck has new indirect lighting, and a big enclosed aquarium
replaces a former fireplace. A high definition stereo TV monitor/VCR is centrally located
over the aquarium. A much expanded video library features approximately 500 films for
viewing privately in guest rooms or lounges as desired. CD photo and audio players augment
the facilities. Complete redecoration throughout the ship with modern colours includes
indirect lighting and ceiling spots in many spaces and rooms. Two dive tenders are lengthened, and all four boats fitted with new cushioned seating to handle 6 divers per launch. With one guide and a boatman for each six divers, personalised service and safety is optimised during diving operations. Videographers can review a previous dive's work on their personal room's TV monitor instead of waiting at a busy lounge system. Camera service tables are expanded, and feature state of the art service equipment. 'Thorfinn' has the distinction of being the only know steam powered dive vessel in the world (the ship's main steam engines and boilers have also received scheduled maintenance), providing silent power while underway. |
Since 1987 the Thorfinn's operations have centred around Truk, with the ship always poised
for an outer island charter on request. Truk Lagoon's 'Shipwreck City' is the site of some
of the world's best, safest and most affordable diving. Warm even temperatures at any
depth without currents and open seas, permit an enjoyable schedule of up to 4 dives per
day in good visibility. Thorfinn employs a system of anchoring at several central locations in Truk always adjacent and close to the wreck sites chosen each day. Uncrowded six person launches are within 10 minutes average distance to the dive attractions. This is the only dive operation at Truk offering a program that features up to 30 individual wrecks per week. A Reef and Wrecks option features the best of both diving interests, and divers are always surprised to find attractions in Truk's big barrier reef equalling those at other island destinations. |
