POHNPEI
Pohnpei is the capital of the four island states of the Federated States of Micronesia, lying approximately midway between Tokyo, Sydney, Manila and Honolulu.

Averaging thirteen miles in diameter and an interior of steep mountains, deep dividing valleys and high rainfall. Pohnpei is one of the world's most lush rainforest environments. Endless streams, rivers and waterfalls feed the exotic flora and fauna earning Pohnpei's legendary personality as the garden island of the Pacific.

HISTORY:
Civilisation existed in Pohnpei as early as 200 AD and migratory routes have been established much earlier but not until about 1100 AD does a recordable history present itself. About this time Pohnpei was ruled by the Sandeleurs, a royal dynasty who reigned from Nan Madol, an elaborate stone city of momentous proportions built on 110 acres of lagoon, with nearly 100 artificial islands creating a network of "Venice" style canals. Viewed today the expertise of such an engineering and design feat, places Nan Madol as one of the true reminders of the world's past civilisations.

In 1595 Pohnpei was first visited then later claimed by the Spanish. in 1899 the Germans, in 1914 the Japanese and in 1944 by the Americans. In 1986 the four states became an independent nation. Today the influence of each of those eras is evident: ruins, sacred places, cemeteries, buildings, war relics, blood-lines, language and family names ... and fascinating tales!

Whilst Pohnpei is increasingly westernised most Pohnpeians retain and abide by hereditary and bestowed titles of the clan membership specific to one of the five traditional municipalities of the island.
